We help newcomers to the hobby build and set up their new helicopters, and we also provide training to get you up in the air. We have a dedicated club flying field. Every Wednesday night during the summer is our “trainer” night. Spectators are always welcome. Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons are the best chances to see some action! During the winter months we fly indoors every wednesday! See “trainer night” for more info. This is where you can come to check out what the hobby is all about or to have an experienced pilot look over your new machine.
What does it take to become a SMRCHA member?
You must be a member of the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) before you can join SMRCHA. To become an official member, you must also pay a $40 yearly fee.
If you’d like to become a member, or renew your membership, please download the membership application form and fill it out. You can pay the $40 as cash or write a check payable to the current treasurer (shown in the footer of this website). You may pay your dues any of the following ways:
- Send the check to Ray and Robin’s Hobby Center (attn. SMRCHA)
- Bring the check to Burt Dumond at Ray and Robin’s Hobby center
- Make other arrangements (e.g., provide cash/check in person) with Burt Dumond or the current treasurer
What are some resources to get me started?
Forums are among the most useful tools for newcomers (and seasoned pilots) in the hobby. Check out Heli Freak Forums and Run Ryder Forums.
Are there any local hobby shops that sell RC Helicopters and parts?
Yes! Ray and Robin’s Hobbies sells everything you’ll need for the hobby. http://www.mainehobbies.com/
Does someone at the club give lessons?
Yes, there are several people who enjoy teaching the hobby to newcomers. Please come to our Trainer Night to see what it’s all about!
